The Kid Who Picked the Team

Have you ever had to choose between winning and keeping your friends? Leo was thirteen when his coach handed him a list of twenty names. Only five would play in the . The rest would watch. The coach wanted Leo to the five — and that kind of lands differently when two of those twenty names belong to your best friends.

The first week went badly. Two of his closest friends were left off the list, and they stopped sitting with him at lunch. Leo wanted to change his choices. His coach shook his head and said one thing: "A team is five people who trust the same plan."

So Leo went back to the game instead. Every Friday he had to his teammates to stay one extra hour. Two of them with him about it. One said practice felt pointless when the team kept losing anyway.

He started keeping notes. After each match he wrote down the exact moment things fell apart. By the third week a pattern showed up on paper. Under , his players went quiet, and a silent team makes the same mistake twice in one game.

The fix was small. Leo asked everyone to call out one short word the moment they moved. It felt silly for about two days. Their score went up anyway, and their in long matches most of all. The whole change cost less than a single extra practice.

They lost the final by one round. Leo was for about a day. Then he something to himself that he had not expected. He had learned more from this season than an easy win would have taught him. The two friends came back in the spring, and this time they knew why they had been left out.

His coach told the school that the club had found its captain. Leo still on his notebook. He keeps a practice schedule, stays when the score runs the wrong way, and checks his own every month. Those habits cost nothing, and they work far away from the game.

1. Why did the coach tell Leo not to change the list?
A team is five people who trust the same plan,讲的是队伍靠共同的打法,跟朋友关系无关。
2. What did Leo's notes finally show him?
Under pressure, his players went quiet。
3. What does the last paragraph suggest about Leo's habits?
Those habits cost nothing, and they work far away from the game,两点都在这一句里。far away from the game
