The Dog Who Knew a Thousand Words

A dog named Chaser could pick the right toy out of a of 1,022. Not by smell. By name. Her owner would say "Get Bamboozle" and she would a stuffed orange horse, every time. She never forgot one. Not a single toy in three years.

Chaser was a border collie who lived in South Carolina with John Pilley, a psychology . After he stopped teaching, Pilley wanted to answer one question. Can a dog truly words, or does it just to tone of voice?

He started training Chaser as a puppy. Every day he held up a new toy, its name up to forty times, then hid it among others and gave her a . "Find Sparkle." "Get Santa Claus." He ran after trial, month after month. After three years, Chaser knew 1,022 by name.

「Find Sparkle.」「Get Santa Claus.」

What made this was how carefully Pilley tested her. He would toys into groups and mix them in different ways, so Chaser could not remember which pile she had seen before. She had to match a spoken word to the right toy. In hundreds of tests she got it right about ninety-five per cent of the time.

Chaser could also learn a new name after hearing it just once. Pilley would put a toy she had never seen among familiar ones and say an unknown word. Chaser ignored every toy she could already name and brought the new one. Scientists used to think only human children could reason this way.

Chaser's story changed how scientists think about animal minds. Dolphins can follow two-part commands. Crows can solve problems they have never seen before. These animals are more than we used to believe. They in ways that once seemed impossible. The line between human thinking and animal keeps getting thinner.

Next time you call your dog's name and it turns its head, pay attention to that moment. Your pet may understand more than you think. Chaser proved that a dog's mind is far from simple.

1. What method did Pilley use to teach Chaser the name of a new toy?
2. Why did Pilley separate toys into different groups during testing?
3. What does the writer want the reader to feel at the end of the article?
