We have reached number two on the Bund, the southern end of the row. This is the former Shanghai Club, put up in 1910 for the British businessmen of the settlement. Six storeys, a pair of baroque cupolas1 on the roof, and six Ionic columns holding up the middle of the facade. It was designed by Tarrant and Morrison, and it went up on the site of an earlier clubhouse from 1864.

The thing this building is famous for is on the ground floor. A single mahogany2 bar counter running just over thirty metres down the length of the room, said at the time to be the longest bar in the East. It is still there, restored, and you can walk in and see it. The room was rebuilt to the 1910 drawings when the hotel opened in 2010, and the counter was pieced back together from what survived.

The bar had an unwritten4 seating order. The end nearest the window, with the view of the river, belonged to the taipans3, the heads of the big trading houses. Junior clerks drank at the far end near the door. Where a man stood at this counter told you exactly where he stood in the settlement, and nobody had to say a word about it. Chinese residents were not members at all until well after the Second World War.

The club closed after 1949. From the fifties the building housed a seamen's club, and from 1971 it was the Dongfeng Hotel. In 1989 the first Kentucky Fried Chicken in Shanghai opened in this building, and local people still bring it up. In 2010 it reopened as the Waldorf Astoria after a long restoration, and the lobby, the staircase and the bar are open to anyone who walks in. Of the whole Bund row this is the easiest interior to show a group without booking anything.
