The Bund runs about one and a half kilometres, from Waibaidu Bridge in the north to Jinling Road in the south. Fifty-two buildings stand along the river, almost no two of them in the same style, and Shanghai people call the row the Exhibition of International Architecture. Among them, the former HSBC building went up in 1923, and the clock on the Custom House first rang in 1927 and still marks the hour today.

The plan behind the door is Chinese: a small courtyard called the tianjing, then the main room, then the stairs. But the door frame often carries Western ornament, Baroque or Greek. The small north-facing room above the kitchen and below the roof terrace is called the tingzijian.

Zhujiajiao lies in Qingpu district and is the best preserved of Shanghai's old water towns. There are thirty-six old stone bridges in the town, and the largest, Fangsheng Bridge, was built in 1571 and is the biggest five-arch stone bridge in the Shanghai area. North Street is only four metres wide, and the eaves on the two sides almost meet overhead, which is why local people call it the street of a single line of sky.
