Good morning, everyone, and welcome to the Bund. The word bund1 is not a Chinese word at all. It comes from Hindi, where it means an embankment2, and British merchants carried it here from colonial3 India in the 1840s. That is exactly what you are standing on now, a raised bank along the west side of the Huangpu River, running about one and a half kilometres from Waibaidu Bridge in the north down to Jinling Road in the south.
早上好，欢迎来到外滩。Bund 这个词根本不是中文，它来自印地语，意思是堤岸，十九世纪四十年代英国商人从殖民地印度把这个词一路带了过来。你们脚下站的正是这样一道堤岸，沿黄浦江西岸铺开，北起外白渡桥，南到金陵东路，大约一公里半。
Now look behind me. Fifty-two buildings stand shoulder to shoulder along this stretch, and almost no two of them share a style. Within a few hundred metres you can find Gothic spires4, Baroque scrolls, Romanesque arches and the stepped lines of Art Deco5. Shanghai people call this row the Exhibition of International Architecture. The green pyramid roof belongs to Sassoon House, finished in 1929. The clock tower6 beside it belongs to the Custom House, whose bell first rang in 1927 and still marks the hour today.

The building with the dome7 on my left was built in 1923 for the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation. When it opened, people called it the finest building between the Bering Strait and the Suez Canal. The two bronze8 lions at the door are copies, and the originals are now kept in the Shanghai History Museum. The statue at the north end of the square is of Chen Yi, the first mayor of Shanghai after 1949, and the square carries his name.
我左手边带圆顶的那幢，1923 年为汇丰银行盖起来。开业的时候，人们说它是从白令海峡到苏伊士运河之间最讲究的一幢房子。门口那两只铜狮子是复制品，真品收在上海市历史博物馆。广场北头那尊塑像是陈毅，1949 年之后上海的第一任市长，广场也就随了他的名字。
Now please turn around. Thirty years ago the far bank was farmland and warehouses9. Today Lujiazui answers the Bund across four hundred metres of water. The Oriental Pearl Tower went up in 1994, the Jin Mao Tower in 1999, and the Shanghai Tower, twisting as it climbs to six hundred and thirty-two metres, was finished in 2015. One bank shows you the century that made this city, the other shows you the one it is living in.
