Passage 1(说明文)— How Do Birds Find Their Way Home?
Every autumn, millions of birds fly thousands of kilometers south to spend the winter in warmer places. In spring, they return to the exact same nesting spots where they were born. How do they find their way across such great distances without a map or GPS?
Scientists have discovered that birds use several navigation methods at the same time. The most important one is the Earth's magnetic field. Birds have tiny particles of a magnetic mineral called magnetite in their beaks, which work like a built-in compass. Experiments have shown that when scientists place strong magnets near a bird's head, the bird becomes confused and cannot find its way.
Birds also use the sun and stars to navigate. During the day, they track the sun's position across the sky. At night, some species use star patterns to determine which direction is north. Young birds learn these star patterns during their first summer by watching the night sky.
In addition, birds rely on landmarks. They remember mountains, rivers, coastlines, and even highway intersections. Some studies suggest that birds can also smell their way home — pigeons, for example, can recognize the unique smell of their home area from over 100 kilometers away.
What is remarkable is that no single method works alone. If one system fails — say, the sky is cloudy and stars are invisible — birds switch to another system. This combination of tools makes their navigation one of the most reliable systems in nature.
1. What is magnetite?
A. A type of GPS device that scientists put on birds.
B. A magnetic mineral found in birds' beaks that helps them sense direction.
C. A star pattern that birds use at night.
D. A type of food that birds eat before migration.
2. According to the passage, how do young birds learn to navigate by stars?
A. Their parents teach them star maps.
B. Scientists train them in laboratories.
C. They watch the night sky during their first summer.
D. They are born with the knowledge of star patterns.
3. Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a navigation method?
A. Using the Earth's magnetic field.
B. Following the sound of ocean waves.
C. Remembering landmarks like rivers and mountains.
D. Recognizing the smell of their home area.
4. What happens when scientists place strong magnets near a bird's head?
A. The bird flies faster.
B. The bird loses its ability to find direction.
C. The bird starts using star patterns instead.
D. The bird's beak changes color.
5. What is the main idea of this passage?
A. Pigeons are smarter than other birds.
B. Birds use a combination of methods to navigate long distances.
C. Magnetic fields are the only way birds can navigate.
D. Scientists have finally solved all mysteries of bird migration.

1. B — 第二段 "tiny particles of a magnetic mineral called magnetite in their beaks, which work like a built-in compass"。
2. C — 第三段最后一句 "Young birds learn these star patterns during their first summer by watching the night sky."
4. B — 第二段 "the bird becomes confused and cannot find its way"。confused = loses its ability to find direction.
5. B — 最后一段总结 "no single method works alone...This combination of tools makes their navigation one of the most reliable systems."
Passage 2(议论文)— Should Students Have Part-time Jobs?
In many countries, it is common for high school students to work part-time after school or on weekends. In China, however, this practice is less common. Some people believe that students should focus entirely on their studies, while others argue that part-time work teaches valuable life skills. Who is right?
Supporters of part-time jobs point out several benefits. First, working helps students develop a sense of responsibility. When you have a boss and customers depending on you, you learn to manage your time and take your duties seriously. Second, it gives students a chance to explore different careers before going to college. A student who works at a bookstore may discover a love for publishing, while one who helps at a community center may decide to study social work.
Third, earning their own money helps students understand its value. Studies show that teenagers who earn their own pocket money tend to be more careful with spending and better at budgeting as adults.
On the other hand, opponents worry that working too many hours will hurt students' academic performance. A 2024 study in the UK found that students who worked more than 15 hours per week scored significantly lower on exams than those who did not work. Sleep and exercise time were also reduced.
The key, most experts agree, is balance. A few hours of work per week can provide benefits without harming studies. But when work becomes a student's main activity, the cost to education is too high. Perhaps the answer is not "should students work?" but "how much is too much?"
1. According to supporters, which is NOT a benefit of part-time work?
A. It helps students learn to manage their time.
B. It helps students explore different careers.
C. It guarantees students will get into better colleges.
D. It helps students understand the value of money.
2. What did the 2024 UK study find?
A. All students who worked performed better in exams.
B. Students who worked more than 15 hours a week had lower exam scores.
C. Part-time work improved students' sleep quality.
D. Students in China work more hours than students in the UK.
3. What is the author's main opinion?
A. Students should never have part-time jobs.
B. Students should work as many hours as possible to earn money.
C. A small amount of work can be helpful, but too much harms studies.
D. Schools should arrange jobs for all students.
4. The passage is written mainly to ____.
A. tell an interesting story about a student with a part-time job
B. discuss different opinions about students having part-time jobs
C. explain how to find a good part-time job
D. persuade parents to let their children work

2. B — 第四段 "students who worked more than 15 hours per week scored significantly lower"。
3. C — 最后一段 "A few hours of work per week can provide benefits without harming studies. But when work becomes a student's main activity, the cost to education is too high."
